PE Work
TY Work for Christmas and Summer
One page at least typed on computer on your experiences in PE in TY to date. List the activities, describe the activities and give some reasons on what you liked and what you disliked (if any). Give some information on what you did and where you went. Give as much information as possible. Name your favourite activity and put in photographs (see important point below). Anything different will get you more marks. Include something that stands out. Make it interesting to read. Make it a personal account (include any funny stories) – what did you get out of it? Did you like it? Include Bundoran and Celtic trips. The more you include the better. It is important to note that participation will play an important part in your grade in PE. Please put your name on your work and staple or put in a plastic envelope. Read over your work and remember to do a spell check.
Grading system in TY is as follows:
1 = Excellent
2 = Very Good
3 = Good
4 = Fair
5 = Poor
Points:
- Work not typed = down a grade
- Poor participation in PE = down a grade (miss 4 classes = down one grade, miss 5 classes = down two grades, miss 6 classes down 3 grades and miss more than 6 classes = Poor (Being excused counts as missing PE). If you miss any of the main activities you may be marked down. This will be marked on your report.
- Short = down a grade (one page typed – I will make a decision on this!)
- Effort not good enough in PE = down a grade (not good enough just to have your gear – you must put in the effort as well)
- Behaviour not good in PE – down a grade
- No Photographs – down a grade – photos must include yourself taking part in one of the activities
If you forget your gear (I’m sure there will be no-one!) then this counts as a missed class . . . even though you will be taking part in your uniform!
1st Piece of work is from Summer to Christmas and 2nd piece is from Christmas to Summer
Date that it has to be handed in at Christmas = Thursday 25th November 2010
Date that it has to be handed in at Summer = Thursday 5th May 2011
(Dates are subject to change)
Late work will be marked down – no excuses – you have plenty of notice!
1 day late = Down 1 grade 2 days late = down 2 grades 3 days late = down 3 grades. After 3 days it will not be marked Note – Weekend counts as 1 day and long weekend counts as 2 days – If the school is open that counts as a day. Only a doctor’s note will excuse you. This must be handed in on the first day back at school. We will then work out a suitable schedule for the work to be handed in.
It is easy to get a good mark in PE. Have your gear, try your best, enjoy the experiences and have a go at everything – no excuses!!! And produce your work when it is due in. We will try to make PE as interesting as possible and we will try to include as many different activities as possible but it is important that we work together on it.
PE Work
Some excellent pieces of work – great reading – interesting and funny – great photos and obvious that a lot of work went into some of them – well done to all

v If the work is late = marked down
v Miss some of the main activities = marked down

v No photos = marked down
What to do????
Portfolio Work
1. Title article – a different title – your own title
2. Summarize the article – not copy it – 1 page at least typed (size 12 font) – include word art and clip art – make it interesting to look at and to read
3. Say where all the information was taken from
4. Say what you thought of this article – did you like / dislike it – you must give reasons
5. Does the article make you think of your lifestyle – in what way?
6. Give some benefits of exercise – use your notes
7. Type it – Print out a copy for Portfolio – this is important!!!
8. Email the work to me – mrdohertyloretoschool@yahoo.ie by Monday 9th May
#### Put your name on your work and complete a spell and grammar check
Points that students left out the last time
· Word Art missing/Clip Art missing
· Summarize the article given – A few people did not do this (they did their own piece – pieces were good!) – but you must do what you are asked to do (some people were lucky to get what they got in terms of a grade due to the fact they did not do what was asked off them)
· Where is the article associated with – website address!!!
· The work must be sent in Microsoft Word and not Microsoft Works – that’s the only way I can open it – sorry!
· Make sure you send it to the correct address as shown above
· Not sure about the work – check with someone else or with me – your responsibility!!
· If the work is not received / sent – that is your problem
· Go through all of the above points – make sure that all points are taken care of in your work – if you do that you will get the top grade – it’s that simple!!
· Do not copy and paste from the internet – very obvious!!!
##However it is true to say that some of the work was excellent – great detail – great analysis and understanding of the article – well done to all – hopefully and I am sure that you did learn something from doing this work

Irish hoteliers want to be part of the solution: The Children's Healthy Eating Initiative
This information is from July 2008 and is taken from the Irish Hotels Federation website
‘Foods for Kids’ Menus Launched by Irish Hotels
Children’s Initiative Reinforces Healthy Eating Habits
The newly elected President of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF), Matthew Ryan today announced a children’s healthy eating initiative for hotels and guesthouses across Ireland. The initiative, which promotes more choice for parents, is the first nationally coordinated campaign of its kind in Europe. The IHF will provide chefs with healthy preparation guidelines along with a range of nutritious ‘Family Friendly Menus’ seasonally augmented inline with the availability of fresh produce.
In partnership with independent dietitian Margot Brennan, the initiative will see the roll-out of a comprehensive range of menu options across participating hotels and guesthouses from May 2008 onwards. With an estimated 300,000 children now overweight or obese in Ireland1, the ‘Family Friendly Menus’ will offer parents fun, interesting and healthy meals that reinforce healthy eating habits with an optimum balance of proteins, carbohydrates and nutrients.
Mr Ryan announced the initiative at the Irish Hotels Federation’s 70th Annual Conference in Kilkenny to a delegation of over 400 hoteliers. “With obesity in children rising at alarming rates in Ireland, everyone has a role to play in encouraging and promoting healthy food to assist reduce the prevalence of obesity among young people. Healthy eating habits are established early in life, so our aim is to assist parents choose healthier food options for their children,” stated Mr Ryan.
In 2008, Irish hotels and guesthouses will prepare over five million meals for children, providing a significant opportunity to promote healthy eating among their younger guests. Coordinated and supported by the IHF, participating premises will help to address the pressing health issue of childhood obesity by delivering nutritious meals that are tasty, attractive and fun for children. A substantial number of hotels are anticipated to embrace the initiative, which has received wide-spread and enthusiastic support from the Federation’s members.
The healthy eating guidelines will promote:
- Eliminating salt in preparation and cooking
- Offering alternatives to chips
- Using ‘real potatoes’ to make homemade chunky chips with no added salt
- Using vegetables & fruit more imaginatively
- Increasing the use of whole-wheat and oats.
- Providing less fried foods
- Increasing the fibre content in children’s food
- Ensuring a child-friendly presentation of food
- Providing fish, chicken and meat that are nutritious and not processed.
Mr Ryan states, “The World Health Organisation (WHO 1998) report shows that the prevalence of both adult and childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Our initiative will not result in any additional costs being applied, it will just involve different means of cooking and offering more nutritious choices for parents.”
Speaking at the announcement today Margot Brennan welcomed the initiative stating that whilst the prevalence of eating out amongst Irish children is lower than other countries, it is a very important sector to contribute to healthy eating for children. “Food eaten outside the home tends to be higher in recommended rates of fat and lower in overall nutritional quality. This initiative will be a significant step in providing healthy options for parents and children.”
The IHF stated that it hoped that this initiative will play a role in addressing alarming national statistics which include:
§ 11.6% of Irish girls aged 5–12 years are overweight while 13% are obese
§ 10.5% of Irish boys aged 5–12 years are overweight while 9.2% are obese
§ 40% of Irish children exceed the recommended maximum of energy intake from fat.
§ 61% of children did not consume enough fibre.
